Ivory pinstripes
ran down, across and away,
as he swept a gliding
hand across her bonnet.

A breeze lifted the hair
on his neck as his reflection
stared deep blues back from
her stately and polished curves.

Before him stood ready
an image sharp and vivid,
light jumping from peak to gulch,
luring the eyes like a fisherman
with live bait.

He dare not stare
for fear of divulging too much;
As a child in school,
he had done,
then lost Mary.

Now a man,
reflecting still a little boy.
But here, now, he had seen
it through to an end.
His true desire

Stood behind him, right over his shoulder.
